6 Ways To Keep Your Brain Young

n today’s blog we’ll be looking at how to keep the aging brain healthy. Aging affects every part of the brain, and it affects everyone differently. Common memory changes include difficulty learning something new, challenges with multitasking, and having a hard time remembering names or appointments.

Of course, it’s impossible to prevent the brain from aging — that would be like finding the fountain of youth — but there are ways to slow the rate of decline. If you’re worried about your brain health or would like to start brain training with the equipment we have here at NeuraPerformance Brain Center, schedule an appointment today! We’re more than happy to consult with you about whether neurofeedback, dynavision, or gyrostim is right for you.

1. Exercise

Regular exercise is one of the best things you can do for your brain health! Using your muscles helps your mind by spurring the development of synapses, or connections between cells. And exercise doesn’t mean running ten miles or benching 200 pounds. Go for a 30-minute walk, ride a bike, do some crunches, dance, garden, play ping pong or pickleball or take up Tai Chi or yoga or kayaking. Just set aside time to move your body — you’ll see a big difference!

2. Eat Well

Like exercise, diet affects all aspects of health, including brain health. Specifically, try incorporating more fish, nuts, unsaturated oils, and plant proteins into your diet. You don’t have to change your diet radically, maybe start by having a leafy green salad with dinner or having almonds for an afternoon snack.

3. Avoid Tobacco and Drink Less

This general health tip also applies to your brain health. Try to smoke and drink less. If this is challenging for you, try thinking of it as a form of brain training.

4. Listen to Music

There are few things that stimulate the brain like music (except maybe gyrostim!). It’s a great way to keep your brain engaged as you age. Music is structural and emotional, and even if you don’t notice it, your brain is doing a lot of work to make sense of it! Put on your favorite tunes and go for a walk (maybe to NeuraPerformance for a gyrostim appointment?) for a super brain training exercise.

5. Meditate

Meditating is an incredibly powerful tool that has been proven to actually change the shape of the brain! It helps regulate stress, improve focus and concentration, and is one of the best ways to protect the aging brain. As we age, our brain loses gray matter, and meditation can help slow that progression. Research is still being done on how effective meditation can be in helping keep the brain healthy.
