Alternative Techniques for Working Through ADD, ADHD, Depression, Anxiety & More

Finding alternative methods of caring for diagnoses like ADHD, depression, anxiety and more, is something that many people look for when trying to avoid medications. Though medications can provide some sort of relief and balance to individuals who have been diagnosed with the following, they aren’t the only option to turn to. Today’s blog is going to touch on a few of the techniques that you can look into when you want to find alternatives for medication.

Therapy

One of the most widely suggested forms of self-care with or without a diagnosis is therapy. Though therapy once had a negative stigma to it, many people have realized how beneficial speaking with a professional can be. If you’ve never tried therapy before, determining which type of therapy is going to be the most beneficial is the first step.

Individual Therapy

The most common form of therapy is individual therapy. This is a one-on-one setting where individuals speak with a counselor. There are so many different therapists out there that you can work with, you truly can go about finding an individual that you’re comfortable working with.

You not only can choose who you work with, but you have the chance to schedule sessions that vary in time and days. Once you find someone that you enjoy working with, you will be able to openly talk about various topics so that they can help you work through your thoughts in the form of communication.

Though the first few sessions may seem intimidating and, for some, even a little uncomfortable, therapists become people’s most trusted confidants. The saying goes that once you start therapy and you realize how great it feels, you’ll never stop going!

Group Therapy

If the idea of one-on-one therapy is too overwhelming for you, starting with group therapy is another option that you could take advantage of. Group therapy is going to provide you with a safe space to speak with other individuals that are dealing with similar diagnoses as you. That being said, when you are able to talk in a safe space with individuals that are all knowledgeable with the diagnosis that you’re dealing with you are much more likely to feel confident to work through these issues.

There are so many different opportunities for group therapy as well, you have countless options to choose from that will allow you to get the guidance and support that you need. Many people also benefit from the relationships that they make during group therapy and the support that they find beyond the session.

Nature Therapy

If you aren’t quite ready to talk with anyone, then nature therapy might be the best answer for you. This is an excellent form of therapy for individuals who are more introverted and are looking for an escape. By participating in meditation out in the wilderness, many people are able to gain a grasp of the thoughts going through their mind — or escape them.

By taking a short hike, meditating outdoors, picking up a hobby that takes place outdoors, or something along these lines, you can set a purpose of what you’d like to accomplish and allow nature to make it possible.

Neurofeedback Training

One of the newer methods of gaining an understanding of the brain is neurofeedback training. This method asks for individuals to participate in a range of activities that push them to utilize different parts of their brain. The completion of these activities provides neurofeedback that shows how the brain is functioning and the way that it is affecting that specific individual.

While anxiety and depression can be justified by so many different things, including but not limited to work, relationships, finances, and school, it is also heavily due to the way that your brain is handling these things. The ability to understand why your brain is handling things in specific ways is a chance to retrain the brain to do things differently.

Neuro Performance has helped plenty of individuals with diagnoses from ADHD to depression determine why their brain works in particular ways. With multiple sessions and neurofeedback, our team is able to help you retrain your brain so that your brain is able to better digest the emotions and frustrations that it’s facing.

If you’ve never heard of it, you should undoubtedly consider reaching out to our team for more information and schedule a consultation. Understanding how this procedure can benefit you is the first step to finding a method of healing that works for you.

Physical Activities

Another conventional method of healing that works for many individuals with ADHD, depression and anxiety is physical exercise. From playing a pickup game of basketball at the local recreation center to a long run at the end of the day, pushing your body is a great way to tackle the side effects that many of these diagnoses bring on.

For example, as someone with ADHD, you can challenge yourself to focus on the exercise that you’re doing and keep your body moving to lessen the effects of ADHD later on in your day, making it easier to focus when you need to.

When we look at depression and anxiety, the most challenging part is that our own thoughts can be consuming and can lead to overthinking. If you are tired of resorting to an uncontrollable amount of emotions, push yourself to participate in activities and preoccupy your mind with the activity that you’re doing.

Though it isn’t a solution that can entirely end any of these diagnoses, it is a great way to go about dealing with those side effects and symptoms.

Mind Exercises

As we mentioned in the last point, keeping your brain busy and strong is a great way to deal with these social and mental types of diagnosis. Mind exercises are also considered a form of mind training, which is what neurofeedback training also provides. With a few different mind exercises a day, your brain can learn to focus better — which is valuable for a few reasons.

An ADHD diagnosis can make it difficult to focus on specific things when you need to, but with some practice on focusing completed, you can start to train your brain to be prepared when you need it.

Regarding depression and anxiety, recognizing the thoughts that are driving you to the low points of these diagnoses can help you avoid these lows in the first place. Train your brain to recognize these thoughts and start working towards conquering them in the methods that you learn work for you.

Some of the different types of exercises that you can take advantage of are chess games, creative literature, applications that push you to use different skills, memory games, and more. There are countless types of brain games that you might not even realize are ways to push your brain — but provide you with an incredible sense of growth in your brain.

Meditation

If you’re looking for a way to cope with your diagnosis that allows for you to reflect internally on your emotions and what’s going through your head, then meditation is a great option. This method of healing allows for you to look internally for answers and to collect yourself so that you are able to go through the day feeling full and at peace.

This is a similar treatment to therapy in that you are required to look at the thoughts and issues that you are struggling with and organize them. Most people also notice that once they start to meditate on a regular basis, it’s something that they can’t go without. Anything from 30 minutes to 60 minutes a day can help you center yourself at the beginning or end of the day — whatever works best for you — and leave you feeling better and more in control. It’s a very empowering form of healing.

Though many people look for it, very few people know about neurofeedback training and how beneficial the training can be. At Neuro Performance, we offer neurofeedback training that we hope provides individuals with answers and relief to some of the most common daily struggles, but we know that we are not the only solution for many of these diagnoses.
