Here at Plasticity Brain Centers, we love all things brain training — and we’re always looking for new tech in our field. We know that you probably don’t have access to neurological rehabilitation equipment, but you most likely have a smartphone. Which means that between sessions at our brain center, you can keep training and improving your brain health.
In today’s blog we’ll be sharing a few of our favorite brain training apps, all of which will challenge your memory and improve your mental fitness. Keep your mind in fighting shape by scheduling regular appointments at Plasticity Brain Centers and practicing at home with one of these great apps!
Elevate is a free app for both Android and Apple which lets you move through a personalized training program featuring games that work to boost your productivity, improve your ability to focus, speed processing, and more. The games are shot and enjoyable, primarily asking you to answer quick recall questions. The personalized program keeps you motivated and the app tracks your progress and frequency of use. They’re also a great mental break throughout the workday.
This is one of the most popular brain training apps and it’s created with both scientists and game designers. The researchers take tasks that have been used for decades to measure cognitive ability and the designers create engaging, exciting games to fit our contemporary tastes. The games are also great for people of all ages, so you can get you kids involved or, if you’re a teacher, your students! There are more than sixty games in three categories: cognition, math, and language. You take a baseline test, perform brain training workouts, and then track your scores to give you insight on your improvement over time.
If the other brain training apps on this list aren’t game-like enough for you, try out Cognito. There are stories to follow — like secret agents and global spy missions — with powerful brain training tests built in. It has all of the features you’ll find in other apps, focusing on memory, logic, word mini-games, and stats to track your skill progression. It is only available on iOS, but if you use Apple’s Health app you can pull in data like steps and sleep to see how these other elements are affecting your brain health.
At Plasticity Brain Centers, we’re always encouraging our clients to think of how their health in other areas of their life (like stress levels, diet, exercise, and sleep) are affecting their brain health. We stress thinking of the body in a holistic way, because sleeping well, eating well, and exercising will give you better results than only using our high-tech brain rehabilitation sessions!
This is a beautiful, polished app that covers a wide range of subjects including memory, language, mental agility, and attention. There are more than thirty mini games to play with a range of variety, and one of the coolest parts of this braining training app is the way it presents your data. You’re able to see your strengths in relation to one another and connect with your friends who are also using the app and see how your strengths compare. The baseline version is free, and if you like the brain training, you can upgrade to a monthly subscription that comes with a personalized training plan.
This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices, and it’s specifically created to help you with memorization. The target audience is students, and you can input flashcard information that you need to memorize for a class or a test. It works differently than other brain training apps because it uses items that have meaning and context, like the names for the bones in your hands if you’re studying for an anatomy test. A fun — and useful — feature of this app is that you can set different intensity levels for your training, ranging from a one day cram to a more casual progression over the course of a month.
