CLINICAL NEUROSCIENCE DOCTORS GO ABROAD

Drs. Matthew Antonucci and Derek Barton of Plasticity Brain Centers headed to France for patient assessments.

Because public attention has been increasingly focused on brain health and the long-term effects of concussions and brain injuries, Plasticity Brain Centers recently traveled to France to provide individuals with comprehensive brain testing. Partnering with Swiss companies Athletica and “Test My Brain,” our doctors provided cutting-edge diagnostics to curious patients from France, Switzerland, and other European countries in the region during a weeklong event.

The group of patients included over a dozen individuals, including amateur and professional athletes, chronic migraine sufferers, and even some who were simply curious about their brain health. They all came to Saint-Genis-Pouilly in France from April 1-6, each receiving a 3-hour comprehensive brain evaluation. Our own Dr. Matthew Antonucci and Dr. Derek Barton provided the evaluations alongside Dr. Michael Golay, Athletica’s director.

Their assessment included:

  • Comprehensive medical examination
  • Heart function assessment in lying, seated, and standing postures (orthostatic testing)
  • Computer-measured balance test
  • Computerized eye tracking tests (video oculography)
  • Vestibular evaluation
  • Vision tests
  • Concussion assessment

The concussion assessment employed cutting-edge tech from a Cleveland clinic known as C3Logix, who provide portable tools to measure neurocognitive function.

THE INDIVIDUALS WE HELPED ASSESS

Some of our patients came to us out of desperate need. One patient said “I’ve had debilitating migraines for almost a decade. They were so bad that one time I literally was hitting my head against the wall hoping that it would help. It’s not logical, I know, but when you’re in that much pain and nothing else works, you will try anything.”

Our patients traveled as far as 600 miles to receive an assessment. Their various conditions included:

  • Concussion injuries
  • Movement disorders
  • Migraines
  • Balance issues
  • Dementia
  • Vertigo
  • Anxiety
  • Cognitive challenges

Among all of the patients we treated, three of them were simply there to see how healthy their brains were. "While some of the equipment that we use may be cutting-edge, the testing that we perform has been utilized for decades,” says Dr. Antonucci. “We just pull it all together, like puzzle pieces, to help people understand how their brain is performing.”

PROVIDING A BASELINE FOR TREATMENT

The doctors provided evaluations and counseled patients on lifestyle modifications they could utilize to improve their brain function. For those with certain conditions, they were referred to brain rehabilitation specialists in order to receive treatment in the future. In the meantime, our patients received answers they had been denied for a long time.

"This was the first time that any doctor could tell me why I was having my symptoms", remarked one patient. "Everyone says there is nothing wrong with me and I should feel fine, but I don't. I'm so happy that I finally have some answers and a plan to get well."

Dr. Barton commented on the power of periodic evaluations like these, saying "One of the best things about these tests is that the results are like fingerprints; every person's is unique, and shouldn't change unless something good or bad happens to the brain. So they serve as a great diagnostic tool as well as a neurological baseline.”

WHO WE PARTNERED WITH

Test My Brain was formed to provide European patients with the functional brain assessments and treatment that Plasticity Brain Centers and other Carrick Institute-trained physicians have been offering in the U.S. for decades. Test My Brain brings together the best neurological experts from around the world to provide weeklong brain diagnostics and assessments—each of which were designed to be similar to the treatment we provide at Plasticity Brain Centers.

WHO IS PLASTICITY BRAIN CENTERS?

Plasticity Brain Centers provides non-invasive, cutting-edge diagnostics based on the principle of “neuroplasticity.” Neuroplasticity is the understanding that the brain is able to change and adapt throughout a person’s life—by targeting specific receptors, a patient can rebuild or strengthen neural pathways and improve brain function. While the approach has been accepted by the scientific community for decades, only leading-edge neurological treatment centers provide a clinical application of neuroplasticity.

Our board-certified doctors and neurological specialists provide a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment plan, utilizing established science and state-of-the-art practices to deliver exceptional results to exceptional patients, unleashing the brain’s potential now.
