3 Scary Facts Every Parent Should Know About Concussions

It’s Halloween! We hope you’re having fun with loved ones, dressing up and treating yourself to a little bit of candy. We thought we’d take advantage of this spooky day to help you become better informed about a health condition that’s far too common among children who participate in sports: concussion.

Concussions are very scary, especially for children, and it’s important that parents be educated about how to spot and treat them. Keep in mind that all four of the technologically-advanced therapies we offer here at NeuraPerformance Brain Center in Denver, like GyroStim, can be used as rehabilitation following a concussion.

Three Grades Of Concussion Severity

Grade 1: A state of confusion following a head injury that lasts for less than 15 minutes

Grade 2: A state of confusion combined with amnesia following a head injury that lasts for more than 15 minutes

Grade 3: Brief unconsciousness following a head injury that’s followed by serious amnesia

Scary Facts About Childhood Concussions

Now that you know how to spot concussions, we’re going to startle you with some facts about children and concussions:

  1. Between 2001 and 2009, an estimated 173,285 people under age 19 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for concussions related to sports and recreation activities (Source: CDC).
  2. Young children are more likely to experience a concussion, as their heads are disproportionately large in comparison to their bodies.
  3. Girls have a 70 percent higher concussion rate than boys in gender-comparable sports (Source: American Journal of Sports Medicine).
