Do brain supplements really work?

Before getting into our list, we wanted to answer a question we get frequently at our brain training center — do supplements really work? Before you take any supplement, it’s important to talk with your doctor. The FDA doesn’t require the makers of supplements to prove they are effective, as long as they don’t make any claims about specific diseases. Instead, you’ll find supplements that “improve memory” or “sharpen focus” or “boost brain power.” That being said, there are some nutrients that do improve brain health, and that’s what we’re sharing with you today.

Fish Oil

We’ve said it many times before on our blog, and we’ll say it again — fish oil and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids are great for brain health. Taking fish oil supplements has anti-inflammatory effects that may protect the brain against aging and may also improve memory and reaction time. It has also been associated with other benefits, like an improved mood. You can also eat fatty fish like salmon, but if that’s not possible, try taking a fish oil supplement.

There’s a reason why so many people drink coffee in the morning — it boosts your ability to focus. Caffeine is a natural stimulant, and you can find it in tea, coffee, and dark chocolate. It works by stimulating the central nervous system, waking you up and keeping you alert. Taking too much caffeine can have negative effects such as anxiety and difficulty sleeping.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo is a popular supplement that many people take to improve their brain health. It is said to work by increasing blood flow to the brain in order to improve focus and memory.

Creatine is a supplement that plays a role in energy metabolism and is found naturally in the body. Creatine is found primarily in the muscles, and you can find it in animal products like meat, fish, and eggs. Those who do not eat animal products can supplement their diet with creatine, which can help improve memory and thinking skills. Those who eat meat may not find the same benefits as they are already getting what they need from their diet.

Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola Rosea is derived from an herb that is used in Chinese medicine to promote brain health. It is thought to work by reducing fatigue, which is similar to the ways in which caffeine boosts brain performance. Results are mixed, and more research needs to be done, but it may help improve thinking skills and reduce fatigue.
