What You Need to Know About Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)

Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) are neurological disorders caused by interrupted blood flow and/or oxygen to the brain. CP usually initially occurs before, during, or shortly after birth, and is often considered a neurodevelopmental disorder. HIE can occur at any age and is typically as a result of either heart failure, near-drowning, extreme blood loss, carbon monoxide poisoning, or suffocation. Similarly to a stroke, the symptoms can range from mild to severe, and can affect any function. Both commonly can cause movement disorders, emotional dysregulation, poor balance and coordination, weak/stiff muscles, difficulty speaking, seeing, hearing, swallowing, and altered sensation. More severe cases can result in altered states of consciousness, coma, seizures, loss of reflexes, and may require 24-hour assistance.
